The Gangs All Here

from $110.00

This piece depicts pelicans and egrets nesting together in the mangrove trees along the Southern coastline of Louisiana. A timeline of sorts, from left to right, of a mother pelican awaiting the arrival of her young, to newly hatched offspring and finally progressing to juveniles about to fly the coop. Pelicans and egrets nest in colonies often on islands in mangroves (a shrub or small tree that grows in coastal areas). When building next in trees they form their nest from reeds, grasses, straw, and sticks but when forming their nest on the ground their nests consist of a shallow holes lined with feathers and a rim of soil. The colonies provide protection from predators and the mangroves protect from mother nature.

Pesticides, hurricanes and oil spills have wreaked havoc on the pelicans natural nesting grounds. I hope this painting remind us all of the delicate balance in nature necessary to ensure future nesting grounds of our pelicans.

I paint in an impasto style using oil paint with palette/painting knives. Painting with palette knives allow a freedom I never enjoyed with brushes. I'm drawn to New Orleans cityscapes and Louisiana landscapes. I'm inspired by the vibrant vivid colors and heavy textures achieved with this three dimensional painting style. I enjoy capturing a view that I would enjoy spending a couple of hours in front of, taking in all the flavor of my surrounding.
