A passageway to a new beginning, a fresh perspective, and the hope of what awaits us just beyond the threshold all have one symbolic origin, a doorway. Open doorways have the power to direct our attention to the present, show us that there is a way out and simultaneously provide us with a view of what lies ahead.
Ornate wrought iron is a visual cornerstone of New Orleans architecture throughout the historic French Quarter. Wrought iron, meaning worked by hand, made it's first appearance in quarter in the mid-1800's, replacing tall wooden columns which previously supported the balconies and porches. Nothing says "Naturally Nawlin's" better than a balcony covered in planter baskets filled with draping foliage and flowers topped off with hanging baskets potted with lush ferns gently blowing in the breeze.

I paint in an impasto style using oil paint with palette/painting knives. Painting with palette knives allow a freedom I never enjoyed with brushes. I'm drawn to New Orleans cityscapes and Louisiana landscapes. I'm inspired by the vibrant vivid colors and heavy textures achieved with this three dimensional painting style. I enjoy capturing a view that I would enjoy spending a couple of hours in front of, taking in all the flavor of my surrounding.
