Roman Candy Wagon

from $15.00

One of the most vivid childhood memories is a day spent with my parents at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans. An absolutely beautiful Spring day filled with new adventures with each turn but one turn left a lasting impression. I can still see the tree limbs blowing in the breeze while an irresistibly sweet smell filled the air. That nostalgic white wagon, with giant red wheels, parked in a graceful curve pulled me in as if the entire earth tilted in it's direction.

The Roman Candy Company has been planting smiles on everyone's face since 1915 making it a true historical treasure for the city of New Orleans. A true family owned business with a recipe dating back four generations. This gourmet taffy sold for 5 cents a stick until 1970. It was important to me to paint the '¢' symbol because there are so few items still sold for less than a dollar that soon it to will become just a memory in history.

I paint in an impasto style using oil paint with palette/painting knives. Painting with palette knives allow a freedom I never enjoyed with brushes. I'm drawn to New Orleans cityscapes and Louisiana landscapes. I'm inspired by the vibrant vivid colors and heavy textures achieved with this three dimensional painting style. I enjoy capturing a view that I would enjoy spending a couple of hours in front of, taking in all the flavor of my surrounding.
