Nawlin's Brew

from $15.00

This piece captures the essence of a repurposed item with a Nola twist. Repurposed items that hold strong memories and connections remind us we are made from our past, while we live in the moment of today, which sets the groundwork for our collected future. With just one glance you're transported to the sound of joy from music filled streets of the city and the sweet smell of fresh beignets carried gently through the air. When I thought of repurposing something from New Orleans I could think of nothing more symbolic and nostalgic, that connects all of our senses, than Café Du Monde. Combining it with strawberries, well, that was just a match made in sweet heaven for me.

Café du Monde, French for Café of the World or the People's Café, is a delight for tourist and locals alike. The French brought coffee as they settle along the Mississippi River in the 1700's. Due to a coffee shortage during the American Civil War New Orleans Creoles developed a chicory-blended coffee, which adds a chocolate like flavor. Café Du Monde continues that tradition daily serving is chicory café au lait.

I paint in an impasto style using oil paint with palette/painting knives. Painting with palette knives allow a freedom I never enjoyed with brushes. I'm drawn to New Orleans cityscapes and Louisiana landscapes. I'm inspired by the vibrant vivid colors and heavy textures achieved with this three dimensional painting style. I enjoy capturing a view that I would enjoy spending a couple of hours in front of, taking in all the flavor of my surrounding.
