Louisiana Audubon Pelican

from $15.00

Pelicans wingspan reach just over six feet and are often seen soaring about 100 feet above the water looking for fish. When they spot their prey, they turn into a shooting arrow with their sharp bill aimed straight for the water. At high speed, they smack into the surface of the sea and scoop up their prey. Pelicans can easily fly over 100 miles a day for food because of a fibrous layer deep in the breast muscles that holds the wings rigid allowing them to catch thermals and soar up to altitudes of 10,000 ft. or skim along the surface inches above the water.

FUN FACT: pelicans have 3 stomachs to help with digestion of all parts of the fish including its fins and spine.

I paint in an impasto style using oil paint with palette/painting knives. Painting with palette knives allow a freedom I never enjoyed with brushes. I'm drawn to New Orleans cityscapes and Louisiana landscapes. I'm inspired by the vibrant vivid colors and heavy textures achieved with this three dimensional painting style. I enjoy capturing a view that I would enjoy spending a couple of hours in front of, taking in all the flavor of my surrounding.
