Great herons are commonly found along the coastal areas of Louisiana wading in the shallow waters of its wetlands, marches and bayous. They are easily recognized by their stately size and display of blue grey plumage. During nesting season males perform elaborate courtship rituals that help the couple form a strong bond. The male chooses the nesting site and presents the female with materials to build the nest in a way to constantly impress the female. Nests are large, 3 three feet wide by 3 feet high, and are built high in trees to keep them safe from predators. Both partners share in the duties of incubation and care of their young. South Louisiana is breathtaking and we are all blessed to live surrounded by its beauty.
