Double Take

from $15.00

Life presents us with opportunities to see what’s right before our eyes, that we just can’t see in the moment. Either we’re too busy or we’re just not ready to see them. Then suddenly, as if spellbound, the room clears, sounds retreat and a heightened focus sets in with a clarity we’ve never known before. It's in these moments, the double takes, that we're presented with opportunities to pause and truly take in what's right in front of us with both our heart and mind.

Louisiana has had the nickname, pelican state, ever since early European settlers were impressed with the pelican’s generous and nurturing attitude toward their young. The pelican was made a part of the official Louisiana seal in 1902, 10 years later the pelican and her young adorned the Flag of Louisiana and in 1958 the pelican was made the official state bird of Louisiana. Pesticides, hurricanes and oil spills have wreaked havoc on the pelicans natural nesting grounds. I hope this painting remind us all of the delicate balance in nature necessary to ensure future nesting grounds of our pelicans.

I paint in an impasto style using oil paint with palette/painting knives. Painting with palette knives allow a freedom I never enjoyed with brushes. I'm drawn to New Orleans cityscapes and Louisiana landscapes. I'm inspired by the vibrant vivid colors and heavy textures achieved with this three dimensional painting style. I enjoy capturing a view that I would enjoy spending a couple of hours in front of, taking in all the flavor of my surrounding.
